News :

August 24th 2008: We invite you to read the excellent article (92ko) just published by The Economist which pays a tribute to both Garrett Hardin and Elinor Ostrom. The Common Property Resource management theory is largely ignored in France as an alternative to public and private property.
However we always invited a member of the International Association for the Study of Common Property to make a contribution at each of our seven International Conferences.

.June 27th 2008: You can listen Radio France International July 8th debate (alas in French!) between Max Falque and Jean-Michel Valantin on worldwide environmental governance: quite different visions. mp3 (3283ko) . See our documentation page.

Who are we ?

The Centre d'Analyse Economique (CAE) of the University Paul Cézanne at Aix en Provence, the International Center for Research on Environmental Issues (ICREI) set up every two years a three-day International Conference dealing with each environmental resource in relation to property rights and economic tools.
Policy makers worldwide recognize that environmental improvements cannot be made using past approaches. Command-and-control regulation may have been effective in the 1970s and 1980s, but the limits of the approach have been reached. Accordingly, we must explore new perspectives and take advantage of successful experiments around France, Europe and the world.
The previous international conferences were very encouraging :
- June 1996 "Property rights, markets and environment : theory, ethics and perspective"
- July 1998 "Property rights, markets and environment : water resources"
- June 2000 "Property rights, markets and environment : marine resources"
- June 2002 "Property rights, markets and environment : coastal zone"
- June 2004: " Property rights, markets and environment : wastes"
- June 2006 : " Property rights, markets and environment : land resources "
- June2008 : " Property rights, markets and environment : “Air Pollution and Climate Change”
- 2010 : " Property rights, markets and environment : Biodiversity "
Each intensive three-day conference brings together top officials, conservationists, academics, stakeholders, resource users…belonging to some 15 countries in order to consider new methods for the sustainable protection and management of environmental resources. The proceedings of each conference are published by Dalloz Publishing Company or Bruylant (Bruxelles) in French and in 2001 the "Marine Resources" conference has also been published in English by Elsevier. Moreover since 1992 ICREI, within the walls of the Assemblée Nationale, has set up numerous colloquia and round tables with French and non French distinguished speakers.
Most presentations have been recorded and published.
